Product description

Glauber’s salt is the decahydrate form of sodium sulphate. It is also known as mirabilite. The chemical formula of Glauber’s salt can be written as Na2SO4.10H2O. Glauber’s salt is known to be a vitreous mineral with a white or colourless appearance that is formed as an evaporite from brines containing sodium sulphate. It can be noted that this compound is known to occur naturally along saline playa lakes and also around saline springs. Glauber’s salt is named after the German-Dutch chemist and alchemist Johann Rudolf Glauber.

Details

Glauber's salt is sodium sulphate decahydrate, Na2SO4·10H2O, found in nature as the mineral mirabilite and named after the chemist Johann Rudolf Glauber. In the salt and textile trade it is often shortened to G salt. Anhydrous sodium sulphate (the mineral thenardite) is the same salt without the crystal water; we stock it as sodium sulphate anhydrous.

Where it is used: textile dye houses add it as a levelling agent so the dye takes up evenly, and unlike common salt it does not corrode stainless-steel dyeing vessels. It is also a filler in powder detergents, used in kraft pulping and a fining agent in glass. The crystals give up their water at about 32.4 °C, which is why the salt is studied for heat storage.

Not the dye intermediate: in dye chemistry "G salt" also means a salt of 2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonic acid (G acid). This page is Glauber's salt, sodium sulphate. Ask us if you need the naphthol compound.

What is the formula of Glauber's salt?

Na2SO4·10H2O: one sodium sulphate unit with ten molecules of water of crystallisation.

Is G salt the same as Glauber's salt?

In the salt and textile trade, yes. In dye manufacture "G salt" can mean a naphthol disulfonic acid salt, a different chemical, so state which one you need when you order.

Can I replace Glauber's salt with anhydrous sodium sulphate?

Yes, adjusting for the water: 1 kg of anhydrous sodium sulphate carries the same sulphate as about 2.27 kg of Glauber's salt. Dye recipes written for one form must be converted. For acid neutralisation in the same dye house, see sodium acetate.
