Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), (CH3)2S, CAS 75-18-3, is a volatile, highly flammable liquid with a strong cabbage-like odour. It boils at about 37 °C.
In refineries and petrochemical plants DMS is used to pre-sulfide hydrotreating catalysts and is injected into ethylene cracking furnaces to reduce coke and carbon monoxide formation. It also serves as a reducing agent in ozonolysis and as a laboratory solvent.
Store in closed containers away from heat and ignition sources.

Catalyst sulfiding: DMS decomposes to H2S in the reactor and converts hydrotreating catalysts to their active sulfided form.
Steam cracker furnaces: continuous low-rate injection reduces coke build-up and CO formation in the radiant coils.

Features & Benefits :
Dimethyl Sulfide is suitable for furnace operating temperatures and only needs one injection point since DMS disperse well throughout the furnace. At the same time it completely decomposes to H2S at 798°C.
Handling :
Avoid formation of aerosol. Do not breathe vapors/dust. For personal protection see section 8. Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in the application area. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Provide sufficient air exchange and/or exhaust in work rooms. Open drum carefully as content may be under pressure. Dispose of rinse water in accordance with local and national regulations.
Storage :
No smoking. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Observe label precautions. Electrical installations / working materials must comply with the technological safety standards
