Because of its unique structure, diethyl malonate is reactive and functions as a reagent for organic synthesis and to make products such as barbiturates, pigments, and agrochemicals. Volatile esters are known to have fruity scents and are often used as fragrances and flavorings.
Diethyl malonate is mainly used in the fine organic synthesis and for the preparation of mono-substituted and di-substituted acetic acid.
Diethyl malonate-based fluorescent probe NE-N2H4 was constructed for monitoring hydrazine (N2H4). The novel probe NE-N2H4 exhibits good properties, such as large Stokes shift (about 125 nm), good selectivity, and low cytotoxicity.
