Mesityl oxide (MO) is a α-unsaturated ketone. It is mainly used in fine chemistry in the synthesis of vitamins, flavour and fragrances.
It is also an intermediate in the synthesis of MIBK, MIBC and DIBK. MO can be a used as a solvent in inks, coating or agrochemicals.

Mesityl oxide is used as a solvent and in the production of methyl isobutyl ketone by hydrogenation
Complete hydrogenation gives 4-methyl-2-pentanol (methyl isobutyl carbinol).
