TPTZ iron reagent is a powder reagent based on 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine (TPTZ, CAS 3682-35-7), for measuring low levels of iron in water.
TPTZ forms an intense violet-blue complex with iron(II). The reagent also reduces iron(III) to iron(II), so the colour measures total soluble iron. It suits low-range tests on boiler feed water, cooling water, condensate and fire sprinkler water, where rising iron points to corrosion.

The test can be used to monitor corrosion control programmes and general corrosion in fire sprinkler, boiler and cooling water systems. Dissolved iron in the water is a good indicator of corrosion taking place in the system.

Easy to Handle

2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine (TPTZ), also written as 2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine. A 0.001 M solution is made by dissolving 0.312 g in a few drops of hydrochloric acid and diluting to 1 litre with water.
TPTZ is used for the colorimetric determination of iron. The intense violet colour formed with iron(II) is due to the [Fe(TPTZ)2]2+ ion. The reagent is also used to determine iron in silicates, refractories and limestone.
