Overview

Sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), a reducing agent for vat dyeing, colour stripping and bleaching.

Product description

Sodium hydrosulphite, also called sodium dithionite or hydros, is Na2S2O4 (CAS 7775-14-6). It is a white to greyish crystalline powder and a strong reducing agent.

Typical uses: reducing vat and indigo dyes in textile dyeing, stripping colour from fabric, bleaching pulp, clay, sugar and soap, and as an oxygen scavenger and reducing agent in water and process treatment.

It slowly decomposes in moist air and can self-heat when wet. Contact with acids releases sulphur dioxide. Store sealed in a dry place.

We keep stock at our Barka warehouse and deliver across Oman, including Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and Duqm. Send the quantity and pack size you need and we will quote.

Applications

Sodium hydrosulfite is stable when dry, but will slowly be oxidized by air. Even with the absence of air, it will be deteriorated and hence it cannot be kept for long and has a comparatively shorter shelf life. When sodium hydrosulfite is wet and in the absence of oxygen, it is unstable and will be decomposed to sodium thiosulfate and sodium bisulfite.

Where it is used

Sodium Hydrosulfite Chemical color stripping agent for INDIGO DYE.

APPLICATION :

Strong Reducing Agent
Dyeing, Printing and Stripping of Vat Dyes in Textiles.
Bleaching Sugar, Jaggery, Soap, Oils, Minerals Wood Pulp, Ceramics and Chemicals.
Oxygen scavenger for Synthetic Rubbers.
Discolouration of Effluent.

Industries and related products

Sodium Hydrosulfite
Sodium Hydrosulfite (or "Hydro") is a universal reducing agent that is used for indigo dyeing. It is also used as a non-aggressive alternative to bleach for removing color from dyed fabrics and for whitening antique textiles.

Instructions
For use with Indigo: use 1 part indigo dye : 2 parts Sodium Hydrosulfite : 4 parts Soda Ash. (Use 1 gal/3.79 L of water for every 0.18/5 g of dye.)

For use as a color remover: use in equal parts with Soda Ash (1:1) at 3-5% by dry weight of fabric. Heat to 185°F/85°C, add fabric and continue heating. Color removal works best at a rolling boil. Keep fabric moving for 10 to 20 minutes or until color has left as desired. Wash with mild detergent in cool water.

Note: not all dyes are fully susceptible to color removal. Results may vary. Test first when possible.

Dosage

Sodium hydrosulfite is a versatile chemical and is used mainly in textile dyeing, manufacturing of pulp and paper, commercial bleaching agent, bleaching of foodstuffs and as a reducing agent in hair treatment. Sodium hydrosulfite is used as a reducing agent in aqueous solutions, sulfonating agent, chelating agent and decolorizing agent in organic reactions.

Sodium Hydrosulfite finds application in water treatment, gas purification, cleaning, leather, polymers, photography, and many others. It is involved in chemical enhanced oil recovery to stabilize polyacrylamide polymers against radical degradation in the presence of iron.

Sodium Hydrosulfite plays an important role to determine the iron content in soil chemistry.

Notes

Storage  :

Moisture and air sensitive. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, acids and water. It may decompose on exposure to air and moisture

When using this product, the information and advice given in our Safety Data Sheet should be observed. Due attention should also be given to the precautions necessary for handling chemicals. Contact of the products with oxidizing agents (hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite, and sodium hypochlorite) must be avoided under all conditions. Hydrosulfite must always be kept at a safe distance away from these agents.
