Diethyl phthalate (DEP), C12H14O4 (CAS 84-66-2), is a clear, almost colourless liquid with very little odour. It mixes with most organic solvents but not with water.
It is used as a solvent and fixative in perfumes and attars, as a plasticiser for cellulose acetate films and plastics, as a denaturant for ethanol, and in agarbatti (incense), mosquito-repellent and insecticide formulations.
