Caustic soda is sold in two main forms: solid flakes (about 99% sodium hydroxide) and liquid caustic, also called caustic lye, which is usually a 48 to 50% solution in water. Both are the same chemical, NaOH, but they behave very differently when it comes to price, transport, storage and handling. Here is how to choose between them for a plant in Oman.

The key difference: you pay to move water

A 50% lye is half water. To get the same amount of sodium hydroxide as 1 kg of 99% flakes, you need about 2 kg of 50% lye. That means roughly twice the weight on the truck, twice the storage volume, and more packaging. For most buyers in Oman who are not next to a caustic plant, flakes are the cheaper way to buy NaOH once transport is included.

When flakes make more sense

  • You use caustic in batches, for example cleaning-in-place, tank cleaning or making up a wash solution once a day.
  • Your site is far from the supplier. Less weight means lower delivery cost per kg of NaOH.
  • You have limited tank space. Bags on a pallet are easier to store than a bulk tank.
  • You want flexible quantities. Flakes can be ordered from a single 25 kg bag up to full truckloads.

When liquid caustic makes more sense

  • You dose continuously through a metering pump, for example in large water treatment or process plants.
  • You want to avoid dissolving on site because of the heat and splash risk.
  • You have a suitable bulk tank and receive large volumes regularly.

One more point for Oman: 50% lye starts to crystallise at around 12 °C. That is rarely a problem on the coast, but it matters in cool interior locations or air-conditioned stores.

Making a solution from flakes

Dissolving flakes releases a lot of heat. To make a solution safely:

  1. Wear splash goggles, chemical gloves and an apron.
  2. Fill the tank with the cold water first.
  3. Add the flakes slowly while stirring. Never add water to flakes.
  4. Let the solution cool before use or transfer.
  5. Use stainless steel or suitable plastic, never aluminium, zinc or galvanised containers, which react and release hydrogen.

As a guide, about 40 g of NaOH per litre gives a 1 N (about 4%) solution, and 10 g per litre gives about 1%, a typical strength for cleaning-in-place.

Comparing the real cost

Price lists can mislead, because flakes are quoted per kg of product and liquid caustic per kg of solution. To compare fairly, convert everything to the cost of one kg of pure NaOH, delivered to your site:

  1. Divide the price per kg by the NaOH content. For 99% flakes, divide by 0.99. For 50% lye, divide by 0.50.
  2. Add the delivery cost per kg of NaOH, remembering that lye carries twice the weight.
  3. Add handling: dissolving equipment and labour for flakes, tank rental or drum disposal for lye.

For most small and medium users in Oman, flakes win on this comparison. For very large continuous users with their own bulk tank, liquid can be competitive.

Safety differences

Both forms cause severe burns, but the risks are different. With flakes, the main hazards are dust when opening bags and the heat released when dissolving, which can make the solution spit or boil if water is added too fast. With liquid caustic, the main hazard is splashing during transfer and leaks from hoses and fittings. In both cases wear splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, keep an eyewash or clean water close by, and store away from acids. The safety data sheet covers first aid, spills and PPE in full.

What to check on the certificate

Whichever form you choose, ask for the certificate of analysis. For flakes, look for purity of at least 99% NaOH, carbonate no higher than 2.0%, chloride no higher than 0.05% and iron no higher than 0.005%. Carbonate is a good freshness check, because flakes that have been exposed to air pick it up.
