Overview

Sodium silicate solution, neutral and alkaline grades, for concrete hardening, detergents and drilling.

Product description

Sodium silicate (water glass), CAS 1344-09-8, is a solution or solid made of sodium oxide (Na2O) and silica (SiO2) in varying ratios. Alkaline grades have a lower SiO2:Na2O ratio and neutral grades a higher one.

Typical uses: concrete surface hardener and sealer, soil stabilisation, fire-resistant coatings and adhesives, detergent builder, peroxide stabiliser in textile and pulp bleaching, deflocculant for ceramic slips, and shale inhibition and fluid-loss work in drilling.

It is alkaline and irritating to skin and eyes.

Where is Sodium Silicate used in Construction?
 
1. Concrete Densification and Strengthening
 
Sodium silicate reacts with calcium hydroxide in concrete to form additional calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), improving:
  • Surface hardness
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Overall structural integrity
2. Waterproofing and Sealing
 
It is widely used as a waterproofing agent in:
  • Basements and foundations
  • Water tanks and reservoirs
  • Tunnels and underground structures
  • This helps prevent water ingress and enhances long-term durability.
 
3. Soil Stabilization
 
In infrastructure and groundwork projects, sodium silicate is used to:
  • Strengthen weak soil
  • Reduce permeability
  • Improve load-bearing capacity
 
4. Fire-Resistant Coatings
 
Due to its inorganic nature, sodium silicate is used in fireproofing formulations, improving safety standards in buildings.
 
5. Adhesives and Binding Applications
 
It acts as a binder in:

  • Refractory materials

Dosage

Sodium silicate is made from sodium oxide (Na2O) and silica (SiO2) with water. Liquid sodium silicate is produced in two ways. Low-ratio grades can be made by a hydrothermal process. Otherwise soda ash (Na2CO3) and silica sand (SiO2) are fused in a furnace above 1,100 °C to give sodium silicate glass lumps, which are then dissolved in hot water.
