p-Toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA, TsOH), CH3C6H4SO3H, is a strong organic acid that is solid and easy to weigh. It is usually supplied as the monohydrate (CAS 6192-52-5). This grade is for synthesis.
It is used as an acid catalyst for esterification, acetal formation and dehydration, as a curing catalyst for amino and phenolic resins and coatings, and as an intermediate in pharmaceutical and pesticide manufacture.
It is corrosive to skin and eyes and absorbs moisture. Keep containers closed.

TsOH is prepared on an industrial scale by the sulfonation of toluene. It is hygroscopic and hydrates readily. Common impurities include benzenesulfonic acid and sulfuric acid. TsOH monohydrate contains crystalline water as well as water as an impurity.
