Overview

Potassium carbonate sesquihydrate can act as a base in various chemical reactions

Product description

Potassium carbonate sesquihydrate (K₂CO₃·1.5H₂O), also known as "potash hydrate," is a white, deliquescent salt that forms when potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃) crystallizes from solution, containing 1.5 molecules of water per formula unit.

Applications

APPLICATION::

Chemical Reactions & Synthesis:

  • Base in Reactions: Potassium carbonate sesquihydrate can act as a base in various chemical reactions, including cross-coupling reactions like the Suzuki coupling and Heck reactions.
  • Sorbent for CO2 Removal: It can be used as a sorbent to remove CO2 from flue gas in precombustion processes.
  • Analytical Chemistry: In analytical chemistry, it is used as a reagent for various reactions, including carbonyl compound synthesis.
  • pH Regulation: Its ability to maintain pH levels makes it valuable in biochemical applications, ensuring optimal conditions for enzymatic reactions.
  •

Notes

Food Industry:

  • Dutch-Processed Cocoa: It's used in the alkalization of cocoa powder to produce Dutch-processed chocolate, enhancing aroma and balancing the pH.

Agriculture:

  • Fertilizer: Potassium carbonate is used as a source of potassium, a macronutrient essential for plant growth.

Animal Feed:

  • Macromineral Nutrient: It can be used as a source of potassium in animal feedstocks.

Other Applications:

  • Dietary Supplement: It can be used as a dietary potassium supplement to address low blood potassium levels.
  • Fire Suppression: It can be used as a fire suppressant in extinguishing deep-fat fryers and various other B-class related fires.
  • Soap and Glass Production: Historically, potassium carbonate was used in the production of soap and glass.
