Product description

Methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate. Methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (methyl paraben) along with the other esters of p-hydroxybenzoate (parabens) are the most widely used preservatives in food, drugs, and cosmetics. Schamberg, I.L., Allergic contact dermatitis to methyl and propyl paraben.

Applications

This is an antifungal that is widely used as a preservative found in food, drugs, and cosmetics.

Dosage

Propyl Hydroxybenzoate is soluble 1 in 2500 of water and 1 in 1.5 of alcohol. The solubility of both componds is increased in hot water. A combination of agents provides a more effective antimicrobial preservative system and propylene glycol also increases the activity.

Notes

Methylparaben is one of the most common parabens. You can find it as part of a paraben mix in most cosmetic products, where it prevents germ growth. It can also be found naturally in some fruits and may be used as a food preservative or an antifungal preservative.
