Tyrosine, an essential amino acid, is also an aromatic amino acid and is derived from phenylalanine by hydroxylation in the para position. While tyrosine is hydrophobic, it is significantly more soluble that is phenylalanine. ... Tyrosine absorbs ultraviolet radiation and contributes to the absorbance spectra of proteins.

L-Tyrosine has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in improving mental performance, alertness, or memory. L-Tyrosine has also been used to treat depression or attention deficit disorder (ADD or ADHD).

It helps the body produce enzymes, thyroid hormones, and the skin pigment melanin. It also helps the body produce neurotransmitters that helps nerve cells communicate. Tyrosine is particularly important in the production of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
