Bordeaux mixture is a copper fungicide made from copper sulphate, hydrated lime and water. The lime neutralises the copper sulphate and leaves a blue copper deposit that sticks to leaves.
It is sprayed as a protective treatment against fungal and bacterial diseases such as downy mildew on grapes, late blight on potatoes and tomatoes, leaf spots and canker on fruit trees. It has to be on the plant before infection, because it protects rather than cures.
Use at label strength. Too strong a mix can scorch young leaves.

It protects rather than cures, so apply it ahead of the disease. Copper sulphate is toxic if swallowed and irritates the eyes and skin; wear gloves and eye protection when mixing.

Common spray strengths are 0.5 to 1 percent, made by mixing copper sulphate and hydrated lime in water. Follow the label for your crop and growth stage, because a mix that is too strong can scorch young leaves.
