Bial's reagent is a solution of orcinol and ferric chloride in concentrated hydrochloric acid. It is used in Bial's test, a colour test that tells pentose sugars apart from hexoses.
When a sample containing a pentose is heated with the reagent, the pentose dehydrates to furfural, which reacts with orcinol and iron(III) to give a blue-green colour. Hexoses give a different, muddy brown colour. The test is used in teaching and clinical chemistry labs and to detect RNA, whose sugar is ribose.
The reagent is corrosive because of its hydrochloric acid content.

Bial's Reagent: 300 mg of orcinol is dissolved in 5 ml ethanol. Add 3.5 ml of this mixture to 100ml of 0.1% solution of FeCL3. 6H2O. The reagent thus formed is to be stored in a dark bottle and used within a couple of hours.
Bial's reagent consists of 0.4 g orcinol, 200 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 0.5 ml of a 10% solution of ferric chloride.
