Eugenol, also called clove oil, is an aromatic oil extracted from cloves that is used widely as a flavoring for foods and teas and as an herbal oil used topically to treat toothache and more rarely to be taken orally to treat gastrointestinal and respiratory complaints.
Eugenol is used in perfumes, flavorings, and essential oils. It is also used as a local antiseptic and anaesthetic.[10][11] Eugenol can be combined with zinc oxide to form zinc oxide eugenol which has restorative and prosthodontic applications in dentistry. The development of high-performance materials from renewable resources is of paramount importance in a sustainable development context. In this paper, a novel bio-based epoxy monomer derived from eugenol was prepared by treating phosphorus oxychloride with eugenol, followed by epoxidation with m-CPBA. The structure of the epoxy monomer was elucidated by NMR.
