It can be manufactured directly by the reaction of zinc and iodine while refluxing ether. Zinc iodide is used as an x-ray opaque penetrant in industrial radiography to enhance the contrast. It is used as electrode compartments and as a stain in electron microscopy in association with osmium tetroxide.
